Patient Zero: October 1, 1998

In response to numerous subscriber queries, the five porn stars to have contracted the HIV virus in the Great 1998 Outbreak are Tricia Devereaux, Hungarian starlet Caroline, Brooke Ashley, who has been very vocal about her belief that she contracted the virus during the shooting of the video World's Biggest Anal Gangbang

Kimberly Jade, who is believed to have contracted the virus outside of the industry and Marc Wallice, a male performer many have suggested may be "patient zero" -- the individual responsible for introducing the virus to the industry in the first place.

Speaking of Marc Wallice...

According to the L.A. Weekly, shortly after being diagnosed with the virus, Wallice was arrested for cocaine possession in a Southern California hotel room with a pair of young women. After his condition became known, Wallice reportedly dropped out of sight and went on a drug binge, during which he picked up the girls at his hotel and eventually became so paranoid from the coke abuse that he convinced himself that his new friends were going to rob him.

In a panic, he rushed out of his room to have the hotel manager call the police. Upon arriving, the cops placed Wallice under arrest on the drug charges.

Recent reports that starlet Kristen Chase was HIV-positive have proven thankfully false.

Chase received a false positive DNA test at the Protecting Adult Welfare (PAW) offices in the San Fernando Valley, and then rushed to have another test performed at a clinic in Beverly Hills. The second test, and a string of tests afterward, proved that she was in fact HIV-negative.

In the light of the recent HIV outbreak, many production companies are considering implementing condom-only policies for their shoots. Gonzo princess Shane was one of the first to initiate such a policy, and now other companies seem to be ready to follow suit, although others, like Legend, remain fervently anti-rubber because it kills sales.

Performers and directors were split in their opinions of the proposed action. Some, like Vivid girl Kobe Tai and her husband Mark Davis, told porn industry trade pub AVN that they were in favor of the idea. Others, like Shelbee Myne were less enthusiastic. And many, perhaps the majority of performers, believe that while condoms may be a good idea, they should remain a matter of personal choice.
