Michael Raven likes to make movies with a dark twist. Fresh off his Best Film win for the good and evil tale Watchers, we've got Underworld. Using a lot of the same people he's used in the past, Raven has put together a cast that can handle dialog as well as carry the sexual weight. Ava Vincent, Dillon Day, Mike Horner, Asia Carrera, Herschel Savage and Jessica Drake are just some of the performers on hand for this tale of sex beyond the grave. (OK, that's over simplifying things a bit.)

The movie opens with Dillon Day taking a strange cab ride from Ron Jeremy. There is something other worldly about both of these guys, so we know we're already well on our way Dillon is supposed to be meeting someone important, but wants to take a little pussy break. After some rather strange dialog, Dillon leaves so the trio of tarts make Evan Stone a replacement snack. Jessica Drake, Zoe and Ryan Conner start out lovingly sucking his cock, but soon appear to be devouring his soul. I guess if you have to go, sampling three hot pussies beats having your heart ripped out with a scrimp fork. Dillon wanders into a strip club where he strikes up a conversation with bar babe Taylor St. Claire. We find out that he's in the underworld looking for someone he lost. After revealing her little piece of the puzzle, Taylor goes outside just as things head up in the bar. Bridgette Kerkove and another dancer are putting on a show. BK is working a long two headed dildo while the other girl is getting more personal with a customer. Three girls end up in on the show, with Bridgette taking most of the action with her special toy then some hard cocks that coat her tits with goo.

Out on the streets, Taylor is face to face with The Dark Man (Lexington Steele in a costume that looks like a cross between Darkman and old school Undertaker.) Still on the hunt, Dillon ends up sitting down with a fortune teller. (Asia Carrera) After some more sing song dialog, end up in each other's arms. Asia is literally busting out of her tight top. As the scene gets started, we see more pieces of the story come together. Thankfully, that ends when he gets down to her inviting little pussy for a mid-rescue snack. When she starts riding his cock, you can really see the soft cut of this movie. It takes several minutes before we see a real tight shot. It heats up as the scene nears the end with some nice standing doggy. In the end he shoots into a glass. In spite the soft cut, smoke and flashbacks, this scene has some real heat.

All that's left is the final confrontation between Dillon and Herschel. The dialog is very good in the final scene, though it does go on a little long. Generally, I don't like movies to go on this long after the final sex scene. On the other hand, Raven avoids the temptation to throw in a disconnected scene at the end just to fill time. As always, there is a lot to enjoy in this feature. Raven has a great visual sense and leans toward stories that are anything but run of the mill. Some of the sex scenes left me a little cold, but as an overall piece, this is an impressive movie and an very high quality DVD.

Starring: Michael Raven again reaches into the fantastic for another beautifully-shot, solid sex fantasy that retells a mythic story, in this case the tale of Orpheus (Dillon Day) searching for his lost love Eurydice (Ava Vincent). All that stands in this way is the Dark One (Lexington Steele), his evil uncle (Herschel Savage) and his henchmen (including Ron Jermey as a cabbie in a non-sex role).

Top notch. As much as anyone, Raven has elevated the porn movie. Yet, he still tries too hard to create an intelligent story to go with the fucking. Even students of mythology will need a roadmap to decipher where this is all going.

But the sex rips. Ava, with her small natural breasts, is a smoldering beauty with just the right icy personality. Her threesome with Savage's minions is a highlight.

But all the characters deliver. Asia Carrera, a mystic who advices Day on his trek, gives our hero a commanding send-off fuck, and bar slut Taylor St. Claire wrestles Mr. Steele's huge cock, though his "menacing" oversized hat is unintentionally hilarious.

But, again, the plot is muddled by a plot that tries to hard to impress.

An 8. Raven remains one of porn's few fascinating directors.
