After School Specials 1979-1980 Movie

After School Specials 1979-1980 Description: "Includes Episodes:

"A Special Gift (1979)
The central character in this ABC After School Special is 14-year-old farm boy Peter Harris (Stephen Austin). To his friends and family, Peter is a hero because of his skill as a basketball player. But Peter would rather give up athletics to become a ballet dancer, an ambition that his hypersensitive father disapproves of and tries to conceal from the rest of the world. When the truth is revealed, will Peter be labeled as a "sissy" — or will he earn respect and support for following his own dream rather than someone else's? Based on a novel by Marcia L. Simon, A Special Gift was the winner of a 1980 Peabody Award.

"The Gold Test (1980)
Adapted from a novel by Michael Bonadies, this ABC After School Special stars Melissa Sherman as Maggie MacDonald, a talented teenage figure skater. Training day and night for years, Maggie aspires to "go for the gold" at the Olympics. But when she is sidelined by an arthritic knee, Maggie is compelled to learn that "there's more than one way to win" — and helping her to learn this is a paraplegic youngster named Joey (Mark James).

"What are Friends For? (1980)
Amy Warner (Melora Hardin) and Michelle Mudd (Dana Hill) are two 12-year-old girls with one thing in common: Their parents are going through the process of a divorce. Both girls are angry and resentful, especially because they feel they've been "deserted" by their fathers. Out of their grief the girls form a strong bond of friendship, promising eternal loyalty and respect, and never to betray their trust. But what will happen when circumstances cause Amy to believe that Michelle is turning her back on her? This episode was originally titled and based on the book What Are Best Friends For? by Mildred Ames.

"Schoolboy Father (1980)
In one of his earliest TV appearances, Rob Lowe stars in this ABC After School Special as Charles Elderbury, a teenager whose summer girlfriend, Daisy (Dana Plato), has become pregnant. Once the child is born (an event which Charles learns about only by reading the newspaper birth notices), the story shifts into gear — but not in the manner that one might expect. Reversing the usual TV-movie situation, Daisy wants to put her child up for adoption... while Charles, hoping to compensate for the loneliness he experienced growing up in a fatherless home, insists upon raising the kid himself. Schoolboy Father is handled in a commendably un-patronizing fashion, arriving at a logical and wholly credible conclusion."
